One of the most refreshing and beautiful things to behold is a garden filled with different flowers and plants. If you would like to have a garden of your own but you feel you do not have the knowledge and skill in planting, the good news is beginners can create their own backyard garden with proper planning and the right tips. As long as you have an area where there is soil filled with good aeration and organic matter, you are sure to grow different kinds of plants.
The first thing to do is to have a rough sketch of your garden. Know where you shall place your flowers, vegetables, herbs, bench and other elements. Go to the spot where you intend to build your garden and mark the areas where you shall place the above-mentioned things.
Using a shovel, turn over or till the soil. Add compost to its top 20 centimeters to improve its quality. This will make you grow healthy plants in the coming years.
Choose a mixture of perennials or annuals in your small garden. Perennials usually return annually. If your garden does not receive enough sunlight, grow plants that can thrive even in shade.
Before you start digging holes for your plants, place your flowers or vegetables on the spot where you wish to plant them while they are still in their containers. You would then have an idea as to how your garden will look like. You can group plants according to color or size. Place the taller ones at the back and the shorter ones in front. Make sure you follow the spacing requirements specified on the tags of the plants.
Once you have assigned the plants to their specific places, start digging holes which should be as deep as the containers. Fill the holes with water and slowly pour fertilizer in them prior to placing the plant inside. In order to preserve the moisture of the soil and stop the growth of weeds, spread mulch on the bed. Make sure to water your plants daily for half a month until they are fully established.
