Which is Harder? Creating a Niche Blog or Training a Puppy?

As some of you know, my 17 year old son brought home a puppy a few weeks ago. Unannounced.  Neither of us has ever raised a puppy before, so you can imagine how interesting the past couple of weeks has been. Luckily, my finance has had several dogs and some valuable puppy experience.

The puppy, Mana, is about 9 weeks old now.  She is learning how to go outside to do her thing, but of course still has accidents.  I know this is normal.  Also, she whines continually when she has to be put outside.  She stays outside whenever no one is at home, so when we all leave for work/school, she is put in the yard.

Here’s the problem.  She won’t shut up. For hours. When you drop a toddler off at day care, they usually cry for a while when you leave, but then forget about you and move on.  Not this toddler.  She yaps and whines all day.  I’m not sure exactly what to do.  At this stage in the game, is this normal?

The other endeavor I’ve been taking on is niche blogging.  Again, I’m making some progress, but I’m not exactly sure of where I should be at this stage.  I can report, however that my adsense earnings are increasing and that yesterday alone I had 6 clicks.  That may not sound like much, but believe me I was thrilled. Any progress is good progress.

So I had my version of a doggie treat – A cup of Kava Tea and some ginger snaps.

I would welcome any advice that you guys have for me – both on the puppy and the niche blog.  Help?

It’s completely normal. Your puppy is lonely and wants someone to be with. Dogs are very, very social creatures and leaving her alone outside all day is not good for her.

    Check this out http://www.dogstardaily.com/free-downloads

Download the What To Do After You Get A Puppy PDF and read it, it’s great stuff! Read the Before one too, if you are interested.

Instead of leaving your puppy outside, leave her inside, in her own crate or xpen area, with a potty place and a kong or other chew toy filled with yummy treats to give her something to do. It will tell you this in the PDFs above. Dogs do have to learn how to be alone happily on their own, even puppies. It’s just hard for them because they are so social. If you give her something to chew on and do while you are gone, and let her stay inside where the family is and smells like… but safely where she won’t mess all over the place and she won’t destroy your stuff, she’ll be happier. :)

Good luck. Puppies are tons of fun. And a lot of work!

Cynthia is right. You’re not doing your puppy (or your neighbors) any favors. Dogs are social animals, and one that’s spent its puppy days whining and crying is going to turn into an adult that whines and barks constantly. If the PDF doesn’t suggest it, another thing that will help your pup deal with the daily loneliness is to put something soft in her crate, with the smell of at least one of the family. An unwashed tee shirt, or a small blanket or towel that she can claim as her own. Make sure that it’s been well handled by one of you so that it has your smell.

    Hi
We always “crate” train our puppies, it is easier and done properly, they will look at it as a safe haven and a place to rest. Leave the door open when you are home. Whenever it wakes up, pick them up and put them out, don’t expect them to follow you, it doesn’t work, trust me. Put a toy or something “cuddly” in crate, sometimes a radio left on or a ticking clock will work to make them not feel so alone. Definitely get the book Cynthia recommended, it will help a bunch. Good luck, we have 5 dogs and they were all puppies when we got them,,(and we all survived their pupppyhood lol

I’m a cat person…so no info there. As for the niche blogging- 6 clicks in one day = piss yourself with happiness. That is great, and you should be happy. I’ve given up on Adsense making me money because I think my visitors are not the type to actually click Adsense. Affiliate sales are good though. Through one book review post, I made $20 in one day. That’s not too shabby. So, I would say concentrate on affiliate sales and maybe affiliate out your own book.

Thanks to everyone for the puppy advice! We’ve been watching a lot of Animal Planet, too and I think we’re starting to get the hang of it.
